Dhaka (GNP): A new think tank survey suggests that people across Asia form their views of China’s modernization mainly through visible development results. The Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies (ACCWS) released the report, titled “How Neighboring Countries View China’s Modernization,” on September 22 at the University of Dhaka.
The report was presented at the “China Keywords” Knowledge Sharing Exchange Session, held at the Center for China Studies at the university. It was prepared by an ACCWS research team and looks at how people in neighboring countries understand China’s development experience, its development concepts and its cooperation practices.
The survey covers 10 Asian countries, among them Tajikistan, Pakistan, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. It also draws on findings from a separate report, China’s National Image in Bangladesh, released by the Centre for Alternatives in Bangladesh in 2025, which allows a comparison of public perceptions across the region.
Those perceptions rest largely on concrete outcomes. According to the report, achievements in technological innovation, infrastructure, economic growth, poverty reduction and international cooperation have drawn broad attention from regional publics. Chinese products and technologies are now part of daily life in many countries, and cooperation projects in infrastructure, industry and connectivity give people a direct view of China’s development.

The report also singles out young people as a key group. Social media, education and tourism have given them more varied perspectives on China’s development and its international cooperation, and it describes them as important to people-to-people exchanges.
That finding shapes the report’s advice for Bangladesh. It notes that China and Bangladesh share aspirations to pursue modernization paths suited to their own national conditions, improve people’s well-being and promote common development through openness and cooperation. To build on this, it suggests both countries strengthen youth exchanges, academic cooperation, cultural communication and other people-to-people links.
Bangladeshi experts at the event said the report offers an objective analysis of international perceptions of Chinese modernization. They described it as a valuable reference for deepening exchanges between the two peoples and improving mutual understanding.
The session was jointly hosted by ACCWS and the Center for China Studies at the University of Dhaka, with support from the Confucius Institute at the university. ACCWS is a national-level think tank specializing in international communication, global perception studies and international public opinion research, and it has published a series of reports on how the international community understands China.
