Environmental Protection Key to Sustainable Economic Growth

Islamabad (GNP): Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) President Sardar Tahir Mehmood has called on the business community and broader society to step up their environmental commitment and take meaningful collective action against the mounting threats of climate change, pollution, and ecological deterioration.

Addressing visiting business delegations at Chamber House on Friday, on the occasion of World Environment Day, he underscored that a healthy and clean environment is not separate from economic progress; it is a prerequisite for it.

Sustainable growth, public health, and the welfare of coming generations all hinge on how responsibly the present generation manages its natural surroundings. He observed that environmental concerns have evolved into a defining global challenge requiring synchronized responses from governments, the private sector, and civil society alike.

Sardar Tahir Mehmood drew attention to Pakistan’s acute exposure to climate-related shocks and environmental disasters, placing the country among the world’s most at-risk nations. He urged the adoption of environment-friendly business models, a decisive pivot toward renewable energy sources, responsible use of natural resources, and a meaningful reduction in industrial and commercial waste generation.

He stressed that the business community carries a particular responsibility in this regard, one that can be fulfilled by embracing green technologies, raising energy efficiency standards, and actively backing sustainable development agendas. Economic advancement and environmental stewardship, he argued, are not competing priorities but complementary ones, both essential to securing Pakistan’s long-term national prosperity.

Reaffirming ICCI’s institutional role, Sardar Tahir Mehmood pledged the Chamber’s continued efforts to build environmental awareness within business circles and advocate for policies that advance a greener, cleaner Pakistan. He extended an open invitation to all stakeholders, policymakers, enterprises, educational institutions, and individual citizens, to unite in the cause of natural resource preservation and environmental resilience.

In his closing address, ICCI Vice President Irfan Chaudhry reassured the visiting delegation of the Chamber’s unwavering solidarity with the business community, urging traders to trust fully in ICCI’s resolve to champion their concerns at every relevant platform and forum.

The proceedings were conducted by Former Senior Vice President ICCI Khalid Chaudhry. The event was attended by Executive Members Zulqurnain Abbasi, Rohail Anwar Butt, and Chaudhry Wajid Ayub of Tarnol, alongside senior ICCI members Imtiaz Abbasi, Shahid Abbasi, Zahid Daniyal, Israr Mishwani, Abid Khan, Waheed Cheema, and a large number of traders and business leaders from across the region.
