COMSTECH to Organise Free Medical Camp in Cholistan

Islamabad (GNP): OIC Ministerial Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) is set to hold a two-day free medical camp in Fort Abbas, a remote desert tehsil in southern Punjab bordering India, on June 18-19, bringing specialist healthcare services to underserved communities across the Cholistan region

Organised in partnership with the Patient and Child Welfare Association Fort Abbas and the Punjab Health Department, the camp is anticipated to serve around 1,500 residents from far-flung villages where access to qualified medical care remains a persistent challenge.

A team of 15 senior male and female specialists will be on hand to offer free consultations, diagnoses, and medicines throughout the two days. The medical team covers a broad range of disciplines including cardiology, paediatrics, dermatology, ophthalmology, gastroenterology, gynaecology, physiotherapy, general medicine, ENT, and female healthcare.

Several experienced healthcare professionals from Bahawalnagar and the surrounding region will also join the initiative, among them former Chief Surgeon of Victoria Hospital Bahawalpur Dr. Abid Hussain, former Medical Superintendent of Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Fort Abbas Dr. Rao Shahid Tasleem, former Deputy District Health Officer Dr. Muhammad Tariq, and Ophthalmologist Dr. Qasim Ijaz Arain.

Dedicated attention will be given to women, children, and elderly patients, and awareness sessions on preventive health and common medical conditions are also planned as part of the camp’s programme.

COMSTECH Coordinator General Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary said that bringing quality healthcare within reach of people in remote and economically marginalised areas remains a core priority for the organisation. He noted that the camp is designed to place specialist services directly in the hands of communities that would otherwise have little or no access to them, and affirmed that COMSTECH would sustain its commitment to similar humanitarian health outreach efforts for vulnerable populations.

The Fort Abbas camp adds to a growing portfolio of health outreach activities undertaken by COMSTECH, which has previously conducted medical and eye camps in Tharparkar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Muzaffargarh, and in African OIC member states including Chad and Niger. The initiative forms part of the organisation’s wider programme to extend healthcare support to underserved communities in Pakistan and across the OIC membership.
