Beijing (GNP): China Foreign Minister, Wang Yi addressed a high-level meeting in Beijing marking the fifth anniversary of the Global Development Initiative (GDI), calling on countries to prioritize development and strengthen cooperation to build a more prosperous global future.
Wang, who also serves on the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China’s Central Committee, said the GDI has offered a distinctly Chinese contribution to reinvigorating global development efforts over the past five years.
He noted that amid ongoing global instability, the initiative’s relevance has grown, and urged countries to continue aligning the GDI with the UN’s broader development agenda.
Four Proposals for Global Development
Wang outlined four key proposals to advance global development cooperation. First, he called for stronger international solidarity to help create the conditions necessary for peaceful development, reaffirming China’s support for UN reform efforts and its commitment to strengthening the development pillar to benefit developing nations.
Second, he urged countries to work together to accelerate progress on the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, pledging that China would continue providing development resources to help address imbalances in global development.
Third, Wang called for greater openness, mutual learning, and innovation-driven growth, expressing China’s willingness to deepen cooperation on innovation to help countries in the Global South seize new opportunities.
Fourth, he emphasized the importance of multilateralism and improved global governance, calling for stronger policy coordination to ensure the UN’s post-2030 development agenda better reflects the needs of developing nations.
China’s Broader Commitment
Wang said China’s own development is closely tied to global development, stressing that China would continue fulfilling its responsibilities as a major global power by linking its progress to that of other nations. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to advancing the GDI and working toward what Chinese officials describe as a shared future for humanity.
The event was jointly organized by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the China International Development Cooperation Agency, and UN development agencies operating in China.
Attendees included Earle Courtenay Rattray, Chef de Cabinet to the UN Secretary-General, ambassadors from countries in the GDI’s Group of Friends, and representatives from UN development agencies.
Participants praised the GDI’s achievements over the past five years, noting its alignment with the UN Charter and its role in placing development at the center of the global agenda.
