Abbasi deemed the present NA as worst in the history of Pakistan

Abbasi acknowledged his role in what he called the "worst assembly in the history of Pakistan" and sought forgiveness from the public.

Islamabad, 9 Aug, 2023 (GNP): Former Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi criticized the present National Assembly in Islamabad, terming it the bleakest in Pakistan’s history and expressing regret for his involvement in it.

Speaking to the media, Abbasi acknowledged his role in what he called the “worst assembly in the history of Pakistan” and sought forgiveness from the public. He emphasized that history would ultimately judge their actions during this period, highlighting citizens’ enduring hardships while only the MNAs benefited.

Abbasi also mentioned the recent detention of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, expressing no desire for Khan’s imprisonment but stating that justice would prevail if he’s innocent. He advised Khan to reflect on the actions that led to his confinement.

These remarks were made during the National Assembly’s farewell session. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced his intention to dissolve the assembly, signaling a premature end to the government’s term.

Discussions with coalition parties were underway to select a neutral interim prime minister, with a focus on collective decision-making. Shehbaz emphasized unanimous political agreement on swift elections and stressed the need for balanced civil-military relations while respecting constitutional boundaries.

The move towards assembly’s dissolution means a caretaker setup will take charge, with PM Shehbaz and opposition leader Raja Riaz discussing the caretaker prime minister after assembly’s dissolution.
