Alleged Irish crime boss Daniel Kinahan charged after Dubai extradition

Dublin (GNP): Alleged Irish crime gang leader Daniel Kinahan was charged with directing a criminal organisation during a special court sitting in Dublin on Sunday, held under tight security following his extradition from the United Arab Emirates.

Kinahan was arrested in Dubai in April, months after being named by United States authorities in 2022 as one of three leaders of the Kinahan Organised Crime Group. Washington had previously offered a five million dollar reward for information leading to the arrest of the group’s leadership.

He was formally handed over to Irish authorities in Dubai on Sunday and flown to a military base on the outskirts of Dublin aboard an Irish government jet. From there, he was taken directly to court for an unusual Sunday night hearing and was remanded in custody once proceedings concluded.

Appearing in a black hoodie, black trousers and flip-flops, Kinahan confirmed he understood the charges against him. One of three presiding judges informed him that any bail application would need to be made through the High Court, to which Kinahan responded that he expected the application would not succeed but thanked the court for the clarification. The hearing took place at Dublin’s non-jury Special Criminal Court, which handles cases involving terrorism and organised crime.

Armed police secured the courthouse entrance throughout the proceedings, while crowds gathered outside to watch as unmarked police vehicles departed swiftly after the brief hearing concluded.

Kinahan, 49, also apologised to the court for appearing without legal representation, explaining that he had been isolated in Dubai since Friday and had assumed a family member would arrange a lawyer on his behalf. He had lived openly in Dubai for roughly a decade and, until recently, had been involved in organising high-profile boxing events. A lawyer representing him had previously denied allegations that he led a criminal organisation.

United States authorities designated the Kinahan group a significant transnational criminal organisation four years ago, comparing its scale and structure to some of the world’s most notorious crime networks. Irish police have said the group’s activities expanded from drug dealing in Dublin during the 1990s to operations spanning across Europe.

In a joint statement issued Sunday, the justice ministers of the United Arab Emirates and Ireland described Kinahan as among the most high-profile individuals sought for prosecution in connection with transnational organised crime. His case is scheduled to return to court, either in person or via video link, on October 5.
