Activist Shaun King converts to Islam during Ramadan

Texas, 14 March, 2024 (GNP): American writer and activist Jeffrey Shaun King, along with his wife Rai King, announced their conversion to Islam on the first day of Ramadan. They publicly affirmed their commitment through the Shahadah during an Instagram live session led by U.S. Muslim scholar Omar Suleiman.

Shaun King attributed his decision to the impact of suffering witnessed in Gaza over the past six months, expressing admiration for the resilience of its people.

Known for his vocal support of Palestine, King actively shared the region’s devastation on social media. Instagram banned his account, which had over 6 million followers, in December.

King, who faced racism in his upbringing in Kentucky, once contemplated a religious career after being inspired by a pastor. He briefly taught high school civics and worked in Atlanta’s juvenile justice system before founding Courageous Church, from which he resigned in 2012.

Throughout his career, King promoted social justice causes through writing and activism, addressing civil and human rights, race relations, police brutality, mass incarceration, and law enforcement misconduct.

Despite facing accusations of fiscal mismanagement and complaints from colleagues, King, alongside his wife Rai, continues their advocacy work from their New York home, where they raise their five children, two of whom were adopted.
