SUPARCO Concludes World Space Week 2025

Islamabad :  Closing Ceremony of World Space Week (WSW) 2025 was successfully held at Islamabad Model College for Girls, under the auspices of the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) — the national space agency and official coordinator of WSW activities in Pakistan.
The Chief Guest of the ceremony was Minister for Planning Development and Special Initiatives, Prof Dr Ahsan Iqbal. Minister of State for Federal Education, Wajiha Qamar and  Federal Secretary of Education,  Nadeem Mehboob also graced the event.

The event marked the culmination of a week-long nationwide celebration of space science and technology, observed from October 4 to 10, in line with the global theme Living in Space. The ceremony brought together students, teachers, scientists, and dignitaries to highlight the significance of space exploration and its growing role in addressing global and national challenges.

The ceremony began with a warm welcome by Dr. Sadia Aziz, Principal of Islamabad Model College for Girls,, who expressed her gratitude to SUPARCO and the distinguished guests for making the event a memorable learning experience for students.

The Chief Guest, Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, in his address, emphasized the importance of science, technology, and innovation in shaping a progressive Pakistan. He highlighted that while humanity continues to explore possibilities beyond Earth, it is equally important to utilize scientific knowledge and technological advancements to improve life on our planet. The Minister specially addressed the students and  emphasized the need to engage with modern education and acquire skills to reach heights of glory and reach to the stars,  which was an asset of Muslims of the golden era. Minister also underlined the Government’s commitment to addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development through modern scientific solutions. He stressed on the importance of space science and how space technology spans so many areas in the daily life ranging from telemedicine, teleducation and disaster management. He raffirmed the ambition that the space agency will utilize all its capabilities to land on the moon by 2035. He appreciated SUPARCO’s role in applying space-based technologies for environmental monitoring, disaster management, and national development. 

Addressing the gathering, Chairman SUPARCO reaffirmed SUPARCO’s commitment to advancing the peaceful uses of space technology for the benefit of the nation. He also highlighted the contributions of SUPARCO’s Earth observation programs in monitoring natural resources, environmental changes, and urban development, which support informed decision-making at the national level.

Secretary SUPARCO highlighted that World Space Week is celebrated in over 90 countries to commemorate two major milestones in space history — the launch of Sputnik-1 in 1957 and the signing of the Outer Space Treaty in 1967. He noted that Pakistan has been observing WSW since 2005 and has consistently ranked among the top-performing countries globally, with thousands of nationwide activities each year. This year’s events included teacher training workshops, student competitions, exhibitions, model displays, quizzes, webinars, and stargazing sessions held across Pakistan. SUPARCO’s Space Education Vans also visited schools to engage students with interactive learning experiences about space science and technology.

Adding a creative dimension to the ceremony, students of Islamabad Model College for Girls, F-7/4, presented a tableau on Climate Change, emphasizing the collective responsibility of protecting the planet. Their performance was appreciated by the guests for creatively linking environmental awareness with the theme of space and sustainability.

In his concluding remarks, Secretary SUPARCO expressed gratitude to all participating schools, teachers, and students for their active involvement in World Space Week activities. He also commended the efforts of the Space Education and Awareness Division of SUPARCO for their dedicated work in promoting space science education and outreach across the country.

The event celebrated the successful conclusion of another inspiring edition of World Space Week in Pakistan, reaffirming the nation’s vision of utilizing space technology for sustainable development, environmental protection, and the promotion of scientific knowledge among youth.
