Astana, Kazakhstan — An expert roundtable on “Contemporary Intercultural and Interreligious Dialogue” was held at the Independence Palace in Astana as part of the 8th Congress of World and Traditional Religious Leaders. The event focused on the scientific study of religious diplomacy in addressing global challenges and was attended by prominent experts, religious leaders, rectors, and vice-chancellors, including the President of the International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI), Prof. Dr. Ahmed Saad Alahmed.
Speaking on the “Role of Religious Leaders in Creating a Safer World,” Prof. Dr. Ahmed Saad Alahmed said:
“Religion is a useful instrument for achieving peace. Specifically, religious beliefs/values, religious leaders and faith-based organizations are thought to have huge potential in promoting peace in any society, therefore contributing to global peace. The religious dimension needs to be included as a constructive tool in conflict resolution strategies. The ethical power of religion can help to unite divided societies. Religion has a vital role to play, especially as it can facilitate a dialogue about ‘virtues’ for shaping a better society.”
He further noted:
“In the light of this theological framework, Muslim religious leaders, particularly in Pakistan, have moved forward for advancing peace and harmony in the society through devising a national narrative titled Paigham-e-Pakistan (‘Message of Pakistan’). It has been prepared and coordinated by the Islamic Research Institute, International Islamic University Islamabad, and is recognized as the national narrative of Pakistan. The Paigham-e-Pakistan unequivocally declares that sectarian hatred, armed sectarian conflict, and imposing one’s ideology upon others by force is a clear violation of the injunctions of Islam and amounts to creating disorder in the earth (fasād fī al-arḍ).”
Prof. Dr. Ahmed Saad Alahmed emphasized that this narrative also safeguards the rights of non-Muslims, ensuring that they enjoy the same civil and legal rights to life, property, and dignity as their fellow Muslims, within the bounds of the Constitution and law.
The presentation of the IIUI President was highly appreciated by the participants, reflecting Pakistan’s strong commitment to sustainable peace.
