Washington (GNP): US President Donald Trump has warned that any Democratic push to impeach him would backfire and ruin their party. He made the remark on Wednesday, one day after Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections.
It was his first public appearance since the vote. He spoke to reporters at the construction site of his new White House ballroom, and he talked at length about the project before the midterms came up. He described the ballroom as likely the most beautiful in the world.
When reporters asked about the prospect of impeachment, Trump said there was no reason for it. He added that Democrats would only hurt themselves by trying.
The question carries weight because of what Democrats now control. Their majorities give them the power to block legislation, open broad investigations into the administration and challenge his judicial and senior government appointments. Trump was also impeached twice during his first term, which keeps the topic close to the surface.
Impeachment talk had already been circling his cabinet before election day. Democrats and at least one Republican lawmaker had pushed for action against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, a strong supporter of the war with Iran. That context explains why Trump was pressed on the issue so soon after the results.
Asked directly whether he would replace Hegseth, Trump said no. He said the defense secretary is doing a very good job.
The Iran war was also central to Trump’s comments. Reporters asked whether he agreed with Vice President JD Vance, who wrote that the war was the reason Republicans lost. Trump called that largely true, saying the conflict pushed gasoline prices up in the short term.

He did not retreat from the decision itself. Trump said he would launch the war again because, in his view, it is the only long-term answer and Iran cannot be allowed to have a nuclear weapon.
His answer matched the broader mood behind the vote. Voters were angry about living costs, tariffs and the war, which has sent fuel prices soaring and deepened discontent with an already unpopular president.
Earlier in the week, Trump had pointed to other causes. In a phone interview early Wednesday, he said the Democrats ran a good campaign and fought hard. Even so, he said he did not see the result as a hit on him and claimed the past two years were the greatest of any presidency.
Several candidates he backed lost races in states he carried comfortably in 2024. In a separate interview, Trump put part of the blame on his own absence from the ballot. He said Republicans struggled to bring out enough voters because he was not on the ticket.
He went further on Truth Social, claiming Republicans would have won in a landslide had he been a candidate. That view sits uneasily beside Vance’s argument that many Trump voters from 2024 chose Democrats this time.
The competing explanations leave Republicans divided over the next step, and the impeachment question adds pressure from the other side. Trump said, “I think it would destroy the Democrat Party if they did that.”
