New York (GNP): Afghanistan’s National Resistance Front (NRF) has said that most countries oppose transferring the country’s seat at the United Nations (UN) to the Taliban, following discussions with members of the UN Security Council.
NRF spokesman Abdullah Khenjani said on Tuesday that he had met several Security Council members in New York to discuss the situation in Afghanistan.
According to Khenjani, most countries have made a final decision that the Afghanistan UN seat will not be handed to the Taliban. He described this as a significant sign that the international community remains reluctant to recognise the Taliban as Afghanistan’s legitimate representative.
The statement did not name the countries involved, and the claim comes from the NRF rather than from the UN itself.
Khenjani said the reported opposition is encouraging for Afghans who reject Taliban rule and want a democratic political alternative.

The issue goes back to August 2021, when the Taliban returned to power. Since then, they have repeatedly sought to have their own representatives take Afghanistan’s seat at the UN, but the UN Credentials Committee has yet to approve any change.
For now, the seat remains with Naseer Ahmad Faiq, a diplomat appointed under the former Afghan government, who serves as the country’s chargé d’affaires at the UN.
The question of representation stays significant as the international community continues to weigh its engagement with the Taliban-led administration, alongside concerns about political legitimacy and governance.
Khenjani said most countries had decided that Afghanistan’s UN seat would not go to the Taliban.
