ADDIS ABABA (GNP): The first regular inaugural session of the 7th House of Peoples’ Representatives was held in Addis Ababa, marking the formation of a new Federal Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. The House elected H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed as Prime Minister of Ethiopia for another five-year term.
The election follows the 7th General Elections, which were conducted peacefully and drew over 54 million registered voters. The Prosperity Party won 438 of the 486 contested House seats. Voting covered 1,139 constituencies including 501 for the House of Peoples’ Representatives and 638 for regional councils. International observer missions, including those of the African Union (AU) and IGAD, endorsed the process as transparent.
Delivering his inaugural remarks, Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed said the country’s election was an event tested and refined like gold through fire, which ultimately strengthened Ethiopia’s democratic culture despite numerous challenges.
He emphasized that while winning and losing political parties are natural in a democratic contest,
Ethiopia has no losing children, only winners.
The Prime Minister pointed out that we can overcome our national obstacles only when we move forward hand-in-hand as brothers.
He said Ethiopia’s influential and leading status in the East African region is not a result of human charity, but is secured through its own strength, resilience and popular foundation. Hence, Ethiopia will continue to serve as a firm anchor for regional peace and stability.
In his felicitation message, H.E. Dr. Oumer H. Oba, Ambassador of Ethiopia to Pakistan, congratulated Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed, Parliamentary Leadership and the Members of the House of Peoples’ Representatives upon taking their official oaths for five-year term.
On the formation of the new Government, the Ambassador said it is reflection of the strength of Ethiopia’s democracy and the people’s firm commitment to democratic norms and values.
