TİKA Supports Disaster-Hit Farmers in Pakistan

Islamabad (GNP): The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), working alongside the Turkish Red Crescent and the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS), has provided a total of 37.5 tonnes of wheat seed and fertilizer to 500 smallholder farming families affected by floods and flash floods in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Through the initiative, 25 tonnes of certified wheat seed and 12.5 tonnes of DAP fertilizer were distributed to farming families in Ghizer District, Gilgit-Baltistan, and the Neelum Valley in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, with each family receiving 50 kilograms of wheat seed and 25 kilograms of DAP fertilizer.

The distribution effort, coordinated on the ground by the Turkish Red Crescent and PRCS, covered 20 settlements — nine in Ghizer and 11 in the Neelum Valley. Despite difficult mountainous terrain and limited accessibility, teams successfully reached 250 farming families in each region.

Beneficiaries included farmers impacted by the major floods of 2025, as well as the smaller-scale floods and flash floods that hit in 2026, which damaged farmland, crops, and livelihoods. The assistance was designed to help farmers prepare for the new wheat-growing season on schedule and resume agricultural production.

Beyond addressing immediate needs, the project also provided farmers with technical guidance on climate-resilient farming practices, disaster-risk reduction, and sustainable production methods, aiming to strengthen the resilience of farming communities against future climate-related disasters.
