Islamabad (GNP): The International Labour Organization (ILO), working alongside the National Productivity Organization (NPO) Pakistan, is expanding its Just Transition and Climate Change initiative to help Pakistani industries improve resource efficiency and green productivity as global demand for environmentally friendly products continues to grow.
The initiative focuses on helping enterprises adopt energy-efficient, climate-conscious practices, improve workplace safety, and build green skills, while supporting both workers and businesses in adapting to shifting demands in the global marketplace.
As consumers, international buyers, and global supply chains increasingly prioritize sustainable products, the shift toward a greener economy represents both a significant challenge and a major opportunity for Pakistan.
NPO Pakistan, selected through a competitive bidding process for its relevant expertise and equipment, led the implementation of Phase 1 of the initiative. During this stage, the organization conducted direct interventions — including renewable energy assessments, shopfloor productivity reviews, and safety audits — across 16 manufacturing facilities in the auto and textile sectors. Four dissemination workshops and two training-of-trainers sessions were also held in Lahore and Karachi, reaching approximately 300 stakeholders.
Building on these promising early results — including potential annual savings of roughly Rs. 26,397,206 — along with practical insights shared by participating companies during this month’s dissemination workshops in Lahore and Karachi, the ILO now plans to partner with NPO to expand the initiative nationwide.
The scale-up will focus on broader dissemination and replication of proven resource- and energy-efficiency practices. NPO has also drafted a Renewable Energy Law intended for nationwide application, while a firm-level Industrial Management and Productivity System is currently being developed with support from international technical experts.

At the national level, this expanded partnership aims to boost industrial productivity, lower production costs, reduce consumption of natural resources, and strengthen resilience to climate-related risks — positioning Pakistani businesses and workers to succeed in the emerging global green economy.
