New York (GNP): Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith, welcomed on Wednesday in New York the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which expresses full support for the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in facilitating and conducting negotiations on the basis of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, affirming that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could constitute the most feasible solution.
This position was set out in a joint communiqué signed by Johnson Smith and Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, following talks held on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The communiqué congratulated the Kingdom of Morocco on its diplomatic efforts to secure international consensus and momentum in favour of the Autonomy Plan, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.
Kamina Johnson Smith said the resolution’s adoption reflected growing international support for a political solution to the Western Sahara dispute based on Morocco’s proposal.
