Venice (GNP): A documentary examining Israeli military operations in Gaza and dramas featuring John Malkovich and Robert Pattinson are among the films competing for the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, as organisers prepare to announce this year’s top awards.
The Israeli-made documentary NAZA has drawn significant attention throughout the festival after receiving a record 25-minute standing ovation at its premiere. The film features testimonies from Israeli whistleblowers examining military operations in Gaza and has become one of the most widely discussed entries in this year’s competition. According to film magazine Screen, NAZA received the highest score among films reviewed by international critics, positioning it as a leading contender heading into the closing ceremony.
Despite its strong critical reception, NAZA faces stiff competition from other acclaimed productions, including South Korean director Lee Chang-dong’s relationship drama Possible Love and British-Irish filmmaker Martin McDonagh’s dark comedy Wild Horse Nine.
Wild Horse Nine features John Malkovich as a CIA agent taking a break with a colleague on Easter Island in the period before the 1973 military coup in Chile, with the actor’s performance drawing attention from critics who suggest it could strengthen his prospects during the upcoming awards season.
McDonagh has said humour remains an important way of responding to difficult global issues, explaining that comedy can help audiences process challenging subjects.
Several films in this year’s competition explore themes of war, political conflict, inequality and personal choice, reflecting a broader trend across the lineup. Other notable entries include Danny Boyle’s Ink, which examines Britain’s tabloid media landscape, and Primetime, starring Robert Pattinson, both of which have added further depth to a competition slate marked by socially and politically charged storytelling.

The Venice jury, led by American actress and director Maggie Gyllenhaal, faces a significant decision should it choose to award NAZA the Golden Lion, given the film’s subject matter and the attention it has already attracted. The award remains one of cinema’s most prestigious honours and can substantially boost a film’s international profile ahead of the Hollywood awards season.
The festival’s closing ceremony will take place in Venice on Saturday evening, when winners across the main categories will be announced, bringing this year’s edition to a close amid heightened anticipation over how the jury will navigate the competition’s most talked-about entry.
