President Zardari felicitates Malaysia on Independence Day

Islamabad (GNP): President Asif Ali Zardari extended his warm greetings to the government and people of Malaysia on the occasion of Merdeka Day, marking the country’s 69th anniversary of independence.

In a letter addressed to Sultan Ibrahim, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, the President said the occasion commemorates Malaysia’s independence and reflects the vision of its founding leaders, the strength of its national leadership, and the dedication of its people.

He noted that Pakistan and Malaysia share a close, friendly relationship grounded in common values, shared faith, mutual trust and sustained cooperation, pointing to continued progress in bilateral ties across trade and investment, education, defence, culture and people-to-people exchange.

Zardari expressed confidence that cooperation between the two countries would keep growing to their mutual benefit, and conveyed his best wishes for the health and happiness of Malaysia’s leadership, along with hopes for continued peace, progress and prosperity for the Malaysian people.

Malaysia’s path to statehood traces back to the early 1950s with the formation of the Federation of Malaya, a union bringing together the Malay states of Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Selangor and Terengganu.

By the late 1950s, British authorities began exploring a broader merger that would bring the Federation of Malaya together with Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak, viewing this as a path toward greater regional stability and economic development. Following extended negotiations, the Malaysia Agreement was signed on July 31, 1963, paving the way for the formal establishment of the Malaysian Federation on September 16, 1963.

This moment holds deep significance for Malaysians, marking the founding of their nation and serving as an occasion to celebrate the country’s unity and diversity while reflecting on its progress. It also stands as a reminder of the value of peace and cooperation, with the federation’s formation widely regarded as a testament to the commitment of Malaysia’s early leaders in building a shared future for the country.

I noticed the source text uses “Merdeka Day” (Malaysia’s Aug 31 independence day) and “Malaysia Day” (the Sept 16 federation anniversary) somewhat interchangeably — I’ve preserved that as it appeared in the original. Let me know if you’d like this clarified or adjusted in length, tone, or format.
