Pakistan, FAO voice concern over climate change impact on agriculture

FAO, Food Minister Discuss Joint Steps for Climate-Resilient Agriculture

Islamabad – Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Mr. Rana Tanveer Hussain, held a detailed meeting with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Representative to Pakistan, Ms. Florence Rolle. The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation to address Pakistan’s agricultural challenges, ensure national food security, and improve climate resilience across the sector.

During the discussion, both sides expressed concern over the increasing impact of climate change on Pakistan’s agriculture, including erratic weather patterns, prolonged droughts, and pest outbreaks, which have disrupted crop cycles and affected smallholder farmers the most. The minister noted that Pakistan, as an agro-based economy, is highly vulnerable to climate-induced stresses, and it is critical to adopt innovative and sustainable approaches to protect both crop and livestock sectors.

Mr. Rana Tanveer Hussain highlighted the government’s initiatives aimed at improving agricultural productivity, such as facilitating the availability of certified seeds and fertilizers, introducing mechanized farming techniques, and promoting modern irrigation methods.

Ms. Florence Rolle appreciated Pakistan’s efforts to modernize its agriculture sector and assured FAO’s continued technical and strategic assistance. She emphasized the importance of joint actions to improve food value chains, reduce post-harvest losses, and promote digital technologies for farming communities. She also encouraged further focus on enhancing the capacity of farmers—especially women and youth—through training programs and awareness campaigns.

Both parties agreed that close collaboration between the Ministry and FAO will play a crucial role in securing Pakistan’s food systems and supporting long-term agricultural growth. The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to strengthen cooperation for a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable agriculture sector that can withstand future challenges and contribute to national prosperity.
