Philippines (GNP): ASEAN Secretary General Dr. Kao Kim Hourn held a bilateral meeting with Brazil’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, on the sidelines of the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) in Manila.
The meeting underscored the shared commitment of ASEAN and Brazil to strengthen diplomatic engagement and expand cooperation across areas of mutual interest.
The discussions focused on advancing collaboration under the ASEAN–Brazil Sectoral Dialogue Partnership, Practical Cooperation Areas (2024–2028).
Both sides explored opportunities to enhance cooperation in sectors like as trade, sustainable development, innovation, education, agriculture, climate resilience, and people to people exchanges.
The dialogue reflected the growing importance of ASEAN–Brazil relations as both parties seek to address regional and global challenges through closer partnerships.
A significant part of the meeting was dedicated to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC), which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
The treaty remains one of ASEAN’s key diplomatic structure that, promoting peaceful relations, mutual respect, and the peaceful settlement of disputes among participating countries.
During the discussions, both leaders highlights Brazil’s historic accession to the TAC in 2012, making it the first Latin American country to join the treaty.
The meeting highlighted Brazil’s long standing commitment to engaging with Southeast Asia and supporting ASEAN’s principles of regional peace, dialogue, and cooperation.
The meeting also reaffirmed the importance of strengthening ties between ASEAN and Latin America amid an increasingly interconnected global landscape.
Both parties emphasized the value of multilateral cooperation in addressing shared challenges, including sustainable economic growth, climate change, food security, digital transformation, and regional stability.

Officials noted that the ASEAN–Brazil Sectoral Dialogue Partnership provides a practical roadmap for expanding collaboration over the coming years. Through regular consultations and joint initiatives, both sides aim to deepen institutional cooperation while creating new opportunities for trade, investment, scientific research, and cultural exchange.
The bilateral meeting reflected ASEAN’s continued efforts to strengthen partnerships beyond the Asia-Pacific region while reinforcing its role as a central platform for international dialogue and cooperation.
Brazil, as one of Latin America’s largest economies and a key global player, remains an important partner in advancing shared development goals.
As ASEAN commemorates five decades of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation, the meeting with Brazil demonstrated the enduring relevance of diplomacy, dialogue, and peaceful cooperation in addressing contemporary global challenges.
Both sides expressed confidence that the growing ASEAN–Brazil partnership will continue to contribute to regional stability, economic prosperity, and stronger interregional relations in the years ahead.
