Islamabad (GNP): President Asif Ali Zardari has extended warm felicitations to the Governor General of Canada, Ms Louise Arbour, and to the people of Canada on the occasion of their National Day, observed annually on July 1. In his message, the President conveyed Pakistan’s best wishes for the continued progress, prosperity and well-being of the Canadian nation.
President Zardari said that Pakistan highly values its long-standing and friendly relations with Canada, which are founded on mutual respect, shared interests and strong people-to-people ties. He noted that the two countries have built a relationship over the decades that reflects a shared commitment to democratic values and international cooperation.
The President expressed his confidence that bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and Canada will continue to expand across a range of areas of mutual interest, including trade, investment, higher education and close collaboration within international forums. He reiterated that Pakistan looks forward to further strengthening this partnership in the years ahead, for the benefit of both nations and their peoples.
Canada Day commemorates the formation of a dominion through the British North America Act, which came into effect on July 1, 1867, bringing together several of Great Britain’s North American colonies into a single, self-governing entity. The occasion was originally marked as Dominion Day and was renamed Canada Day in 1982, following Canada’s attainment of full independence from Great Britain in the same year.
The day is traditionally celebrated across Canada with parades, community gatherings, picnics and fireworks, with the largest observance held on Parliament Hill in the capital city of Ottawa. Ceremonial displays, including performances by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and an air show by the Royal Canadian Air Force, form part of the national celebrations that bring together Canadians in a shared expression of national pride and unity.
Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also extended its greetings on the occasion, conveying the country’s heartiest felicitations to the government and people of Canada and wishing them a happy Canada Day. Such expressions of goodwill reflect the broader warmth that characterises the relationship between the two countries at both the governmental and diplomatic levels.

Pakistan and Canada share a relationship that spans several decades and continues to grow across diverse fields. The two countries maintain active engagement in trade and investment, with efforts underway to expand economic cooperation and open new avenues for commercial partnership. Educational ties remain a significant pillar of the relationship, with a substantial number of Pakistani students pursuing higher education in Canadian institutions each year, contributing to a growing base of academic and professional exchange.
The Pakistani diaspora in Canada has also played an important role in strengthening people-to-people connections, fostering cultural understanding and reinforcing the bonds between the two nations. On the international stage, Pakistan and Canada continue to collaborate within multilateral forums, working together on issues of shared global concern and reflecting a broader commitment to constructive engagement in international affairs.

With cooperation already extending across trade, education and diplomatic engagement, both countries appear well positioned to deepen their partnership further, exploring new opportunities that serve their mutual interests while contributing positively to regional and international stability.
The exchange of felicitations on this occasion serves as a reaffirmation of the friendly ties that have long defined the Pakistan-Canada relationship, and of the shared intent to build upon this foundation in the years to come.
