Chairman of the Senate, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, addressed the gathering, saying, “I am delighted to be present here today on this very special occasion of the Independence Day of our brotherly country, Azerbaijan.”

Azerbaijan and Pakistan have a lot in common, culturally, religiously, and historically. We are like twin brothers, and whatever happens in Azerbaijan happens in Pakistan.

I recall when Pakistan stood victorious against Indian aggression, the people of Azerbaijan celebrated in a remarkable way, as if they themselves had won. Pakistan and Azerbaijan are truly brotherly nations. I have had extensive interactions with the people of Azerbaijan and their leadership.

I had the honor of meeting the President of Azerbaijan, the Speaker of the Senate, the Prime Minister, and the Chairman of the Senate. We have been maintaining strong diplomatic relations, including parliamentary delegations and active participation in international forums such as the IPU and the Asian Parliamentary Assembly.

Moreover, he said, in many other areas, we share commonality, and we are so delighted today that Azerbaijan is contributing a lot to the year you have declared, Excellency, the Year of Architecture, as the President of Azerbaijan himself told me that they are going to modernize Islamabad and will also develop a new architectural plan for Islamabad. We again congratulate you on your Independence Day.

The Chairman of the Senate said that the people of Pakistan and the Parliament of Pakistan share the same views as we have been expressing here in Pakistan. We need more connectivity. When I discussed this with the President of Azerbaijan, they have already started 11 flights a week from Lahore and Islamabad, and the fare is hardly comparable to other international airlines. It takes only three hours to reach Baku.

So I will also try to increase flights so that there will be daily flights to Baku, enabling more tourists to visit. When I met the President, he mentioned one thing. He said there is a very historic place in Baku known as Multani Karwan Sarai, and it is 700 years old.

UNESCO has taken it over. And he said,  Chairman, we haven’t changed the name since the merchants from Wastan via the Silk Route, 700 years back, they used to visit Azerbaijan and Baku, therefore will not change the name.

The highlight of the gathering was a ceremonial cake-cutting, symbolizing the strong fraternal ties between Islamabad and Baku. Officials from both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation across trade, energy, and defense sectors.

The event underscored the mutual respect and longstanding friendship between the two nations, with leaders praising Azerbaijan’s rich history and its progress since gaining independence.
