Sherry Condemns Indian Defence Minister’s Remarks on Sindh Province

Islamabad, — Senator Sherry Rehman strongly condemned the recent remarks made by India’s Defence Minister regarding Pakistan’s Sindh province. The comments are “provocative, revisionist, and deeply irresponsible”, reflecting a dangerous pattern of rhetoric that undermines regional stability and violates internationally recognized norms governing state sovereignty.

“Such statements are not just factually baseless; they expose an alarming escalation in expansionist Hindutva narrative within India that has no place in responsible statecraft,” Senator Rehman said. “The Indian Defence Minister’s remarks on Sindh are not only offensive, but expose an aversion or ignorance of history that borders on self-sabotage . He obviously does not know, or chooses to forget, that Sindh was the first Province to declare for joining Pakistani well before partition and independence in 1947. The legacy commitment to Pakistan was not limited to Muslim Sindhis incidentally.

It is part of Sindh’s official recorded journey, where even under the British occupation of India, Sindh fought against inclusion in the Bombay Presidency and detached from it on April 1, 1936.”

Senator Rehman asserted “Playing the ethno-nationalist card for a province that regularly votes in one of the largest federal parties in Pakistan, the PPP, whose leadership has fought against terrorism and wars brewed in India is quite a new low in strategic desperation.”

“Mr Singh really should focus on large swathes of disaffected regions in the north-east of his own country. And also wake up to the reality that India’s blatant and illegal occupation of Kashmir is not working, despite deploying a million security forces there.”

Senator Rehman reminded “If hawks in Pakistan start talking they will remind him that it is Sindh which gives it’s ancient Sindhu name to the Indus River as well as the Indus Valley Civilisation after which India has fashioned its pre-Bharat name. By his own logic Pakistan can be asking for certain Indian territories to secede to Pakistan. But we don’t play that game. We don’t put up expansionist maps of our country in parliament that trigger such delusional dreams. We are a modern, peaceful, Westphalian state which knows how to flex in defence of our sovereign territory on any battle space when needed.

Senator Rehman urged Indian leadership to refrain from inflammatory rhetoric and instead address the urgent issues affecting their own citizens, particularly marginalized and vulnerable communities. “At a time when the region requires de-escalation and responsible governance, indulging in divisive posturing only increases tensions. India would do well to focus on safeguarding the rights of its minorities and addressing the unresolved grievances in its northeastern states, where communities continue to face discrimination and violence,” she added.

She further stressed that durable peace in South Asia remains impossible without a just and equitable resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in line with UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. “Pakistan has always supported peaceful, lawful, and negotiated solutions. But peace cannot be built on provocation or distortion.”

Reaffirming Pakistan’s longstanding commitment to regional stability, Senator Rehman emphasized: “Pakistan will continue to defend its sovereignty, national independence, and the rights of its people. We remain committed to diplomacy grounded in international law, but we will never compromise on our security or the sanctity of our borders.”
