Pak-Canada agreed to strengthen coordination for sustainable, transparent trade

Pakistan and Canada Move Toward Efficient GM Canola Trade Framework in High-Level Meeting

Islamabad : Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr Musadik Malik, met with the Canadian High Commissioner to Pakistan, Tarik Ali Khan. Also present in the meeting was Secretary Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Aisha Moriani. The meeting focused on various aspects of the trade of GM Canola between the two countries, particularly the limitations associated with Harmonized System (HS) codes and the need for greater clarity and efficiency in related procedures.

Dr. Musadik Malik assured the High Commissioner that the Ministry remains committed to minimizing procedural delays and ensuring that any new policies or amendments to existing frameworks are aimed at streamlining processes and facilitating both importers and exporters. He further informed the High Commissioner that the Ministry is actively upgrading its digital dashboard to improve transparency, efficiency, and ease of doing business for all relevant stakeholders. The discussion also touched upon enhancing institutional capacity within the Ministry to better manage technical and regulatory aspects of climate-linked trade, agricultural commodities, and biosafety-related issues.

High Commissioner Tarik Ali Khan reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in expanding trade opportunities in the agriculture and food sectors. He appreciated the Ministry’s efforts to improve regulatory mechanisms and expressed Canada’s continued support for collaborative initiatives with Pakistan.

Both sides agreed to maintain close coordination and work together to promote sustainable, transparent, and mutually beneficial trade practices.
