Sherry Submits Senate Resolution Condemning Brutal Honour Killing in Balochistan

Islamabadb — Vice President of the Pakistan Peoples Party Senator Sherry Rehman, submitted a powerful resolution in the Senate condemning the horrific and cold-blooded murder of a man and woman in Balochistan, calling the act a gross violation of human rights and the Constitution of Pakistan.

“This House strongly condemns the heinous killing of a man and woman in broad daylight in Balochistan,” stated Senator Rehman. “This is not a matter of honour. It is murder—plain and simple. No tribal, cultural, or traditional justification can be accepted for such barbarism.”

In her resolution, Senator Rehman emphasized that the killing is a blatant breach of Pakistan’s legal and constitutional framework. “Such crimes bring national shame. Any attempt to excuse these acts under the guise of custom or tradition must be rejected outright. Blaming the victims only perpetuates a culture of impunity.”

The resolution recalls that Parliament has already passed landmark legal reforms declaring that so-called honour killings are non-compoundable offences. “This House has made it clear that compromise or out-of-court settlements in such cases are unacceptable,” Senator Rehman said. “Yet, despite these reforms, implementation remains weak. High-profile cases continue to expose glaring obstacles to justice, particularly in crimes against women.”

Senator Rehman called for the immediate and transparent investigation of the recent incident and urged that “all those involved, including those who convened or permitted any tribal jirga that sanctioned such a killing, must be brought to justice.”

She further stated that law enforcement agencies must act strictly under existing legal provisions, with “zero tolerance for leniency or discretionary attitudes in such grave matters.”

The resolution also directs the Ministries of Law, Justice, and Human Rights to conduct a thorough review of gaps in implementation and to propose actionable reforms to ensure enforcement. It calls for training of prosecutors and investigating officers to treat gender-based violence and honour killings as serious, punishable crimes.

Senator Rehman urged the federal and provincial governments to launch large-scale public awareness campaigns that unequivocally denounce honour-based violence and promote the supremacy of the Constitution and rule of law.

“This House reaffirms that all citizens of Pakistan are equal before the law and equally entitled to its protection,” she stated. “Our commitment to safeguarding the rights, dignity, and security of women under the Constitution is unwavering.”

Senator Rehman concluded by noting that Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has called for further parliamentary debate on the matter, adding that PPP members have already raised the issue vociferously in the National Assembly.
