UK’s support for peace and water governance in Pakistan, Sherry

Senator Sherry welcomes debate in UK Parliament on Kashmir and Indus Waters Treaty

Islamabad : — Vice President of the Pakistan Peoples Party Senator Sherry Rehman, has welcomed the strong and timely deliberations held in the UK Parliament on the Kashmir conflict, the recent escalation between India and Pakistan, and the future of the Indus Waters Treaty, calling the debate “a significant acknowledgement of the urgency and gravity of the unresolved issues plaguing South Asia.”

Referring to statements made by Lord Shafaq, Lord Jeremy Purvis, and Secretary of State for International Development Baroness Jenny Chapman, Senator Rehman said:

“It is both heartening and necessary that respected voices in the UK Parliament are shining a light on the humanitarian crisis in Indian-occupied Kashmir and the fragile future of the Indus Waters Treaty—two pillars of regional peace that are now under serious threat. The international community cannot afford to remain silent spectators while one party continues to violate fundamental rights and disrupt established treaties.”

Senator Rehman particularly appreciated Lord Shafaq’s historical framing of the Kashmir conflict, saying:

“Lord Shafaq’s reminder that the Kashmiri people had themselves passed a resolution for accession to Pakistan on this very day in 1947 brings the focus back to the core issue: the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. His acknowledgment of India’s illegal occupation and ongoing human rights violations is a truthful reckoning that echoes the lived reality of millions under siege.”

She also acknowledged Lord Jeremy Purvis’ remarks:

“Lord Purvis rightly flagged the breakdown of the India-Pakistan Indus Commission and the unprecedented escalation involving drone warfare, which we in the region know all too well. His caution on water-related conflicts is both timely and crucial, especially with climate change accelerating resource scarcity and geopolitical risk. Water, as we have long warned, could become the next theatre of war if diplomacy and treaty integrity fail.”

Commenting on the UK Government’s response, Senator Rehman stated:

“While we appreciate Baroness Jenny Chapman’s reaffirmation of the UK’s commitment to peace and support for Pakistan’s water governance, we do recognise that this is not simply a bilateral issue—it is a question of international law, human rights, and climate justice. The UN resolutions on Kashmir are not optional guidelines; they are binding commitments.”

She reiterated the Pakistan Peoples Party’s long-standing position on Kashmir
“Our party has consistently raised the Kashmir issue on every available forum. Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has boldly carried the Kashmiri voice to capitals across the world. The UK’s large South Asian diaspora and its historical connection to the region place it in a unique position to advocate for peace, justice, and accountability.”

Concluding her remarks, Senator Rehman said
“The voices raised in the UK Parliament are a testament to the growing international concern over India’s unilateral actions, repression in Kashmir, and attempts to dismantle the Indus Waters Treaty.”
