SSDO called for an urgent and integrated national policy

Islamabad : On the occasion of the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought the Sustainable Social Development Organization (SSDO) has called for an urgent and integrated national policy response to tackle growing climate-related challenges, particularly land degradation, water scarcity and extreme weather events that increasingly threaten communities across Pakistan.

SSDO highlighted that climate change is no longer a distant or abstract threat, but one that is directly impacting livelihoods, agriculture and public health , especially in vulnerable rural and underdeveloped regions of the country. The organization emphasized that Pakistan faces a multifaceted environmental crisis which demands long-term investment, stronger institutional coordination and a shift in development priorities.

Speaking on behalf of SSDO, Executive Director Syed Kausar Abbas stated that desertification, drought and soil degradation have reached alarming levels in many parts of the country, exacerbating poverty and food insecurity. He said that This is not just an environmental issue , it is a human development crisis. The impacts of climate breakdown are already visible in our fields, towns and homes. Immediate and sustained action is essential if we are to safeguard our natural resources and protect future generations.

He added that SSDO through its initiative The Climate Optics is actively working to promote climate awareness and advocate for environmental justice. The platform engages stakeholders across sectorsgovernment, civil society, academia and media to highlight community-level impacts and push for evidence-based climate policies.
