Western Pressure on Iran to adhere to nuclear non-proliferation rules

1,191

Tehran, 20 November 2022 (GNP): Britain, France, Germany (the “E3”), and the United States have urged Tehran to uphold its responsibilities under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty following the passage of a resolution on Iran by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors (NPT).

The four countries said in a joint statement that this resolution was taken in reaction to Iran’s inadequate cooperation with the IAEA on important and unresolved matters pertaining to Iran’s legal duties under its Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) safeguards arrangement.

In light of this, the US and the E3 called on Tehran to uphold its duties under the NPT Safeguards Agreement and provide “technically credible explanations” for the existence of uranium particles discovered in three classified locations throughout Iran as well as the location of any related nuclear material or contaminated equipment.

The statement noted that it is hoped that Iran would seize this opportunity to work in the best interests of the IAEA to resolve these remaining problems in order to prevent the necessity for further action by the Board of Governors on this matter.
