UNICEF alarms on undernourishment in mothers

Undernutrition in Mothers Increases by 25% in 12 Countries at the Epicenter of World Food Crisis

New York, 7 March 2023 (GNP): The world food crisis is worsening as undernutrition in mothers has increased by 25% in 12 countries at the epicenter of the crisis since 2020, according to a new report released today. The report reveals that the pandemic and its aftermath have significantly exacerbated these countries’ already dire food security situation.

The 12 countries are primarily located in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, and they have been grappling with a host of challenges related to food security, including climate change, conflict, and economic instability.

The report provides an extensive and unprecedented assessment of the nutritional status of adolescent girls and women worldwide.

It reveals that over one billion of them are affected by undernutrition, which includes being underweight, having stunted growth, lacking essential micronutrients, and suffering from anemia. These conditions have severe consequences for their overall health and well-being.

The report calls on governments, international organizations, and other stakeholders to prioritize efforts to address the food crisis and support mothers and children who are at risk of undernutrition. Specifically, the report recommends increasing investment in agriculture, improving access to healthcare and nutrition services, and expanding social safety nets to support vulnerable families.

Russell stated that when a girl or woman doesn’t receive sufficient nutrition, it contributes to the persistence of gender inequality. This results in reduced learning and earning capacity, increases the possibility of life-threatening complications during pregnancy and childbirth, and raises the likelihood of giving birth to undernourished babies. He emphasized that we are aware of the essential measures needed to provide life-saving nutritional assistance and services to women and children in need. The only requirement is to generate political will and resources to act immediately, as there is no time to lose.
