New York, 16 December 2022 (GNP/ TDI): The UN General Assembly (UNGA) on 14 December 2022, approved a resolution focusing on the role of Parliament. The adoption of the Resolution was proposed by the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, during the 75th session of the UNGA in 2020.
The Resolution stated to enhance the role of parliament in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Moreover, the resolution approved by UNGA emphasizes the crucial role that parliaments play in reinforcing their commitment to unity, solidarity, and multilateral cooperation. This will support an inclusive, strong, and long-lasting recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and enhance efforts for sustainable development.
Role of states and youth
The General Assembly encourages states to assist parliaments in guaranteeing and enhancing national ownership and accountability. Also, UNGA wants states to support and involve in SDGs follow-up and review processes, particularly in the creation of voluntary national review.
Furthermore, the role of youth plays a significant part in the successful implementation of the 2030 Agenda. This will ensure their full, equal, and meaningful involvement in parliamentary procedures.
Gender equality as a key factor
The focus is primarily on achieving gender equality being a key component to achieving SDGs. This can be done by encouraging women’s full, equal, and meaningful involvement in governmental organisations and parliamentary processes.
Countries involvement
The document was co-authored by 80 states from all continents of the world. These include Central Asia, as well as Austria, Algeria, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Belgium, Germany, Egypt, Spain, Indonesia, Italy, Qatar, China, Colombia, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Finland, France, Sweden, Japan, and others.

It is important to note that UNGA and other international organizations warmly welcomed the resolution presented by Uzbekistan. It is highlighted that the resolution would serve as a special road map for lawmakers, directing their efforts toward SDGs’ implementation.
However, the Inter-Parliamentary Union views this document as a crucial step in preparing for the SDG Summit. This summit will be held in September 2023 as part of the High-Level General Debate of the 78th session of the UNGA.
