Earthquake in Turkiye

On February 6, 2023, an earthquake of a magnitude of 7.8 occurred. Around 04:17 TRT, it hit northern and western Syria, as well as southern and central Turkey.

The quake’s epicentre was 20 miles (32 kilometres) west-northwest of Gaziantep. The maximum Mercalli intensity of the earthquake was XI.

The Mercalli intensity scale, sometimes known as the  Modified Mercalli intensity scale is a measure used to evaluate earthquake intensity. In contrast to the Richter scale, the Mercalli scale does not explicitly account for an earthquake’s energy.

An earthquake with an intensity of XI on the maximum Mercalli scale is considered severe. It does greatest damage with few if any, structures standing shattering bridges, and causing vast breaches in the earth.
