TLP workers forcibly shutdown markets in Lahore

Traders seek security from the government after complaining of harassment from TLP baton-brandishing workers

Lahore, 28 February 2023 (GNP): The Kashmir Block, Karachi Block, and several other markets in Lahore were forcibly closed down on Monday by Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) members baton-wielding, despite the refusal of the traders to take part in their shutter-down strike over inflation and petrol price increases.

The TLP gave the Federal Government a 72-hour “ultimatum” on February 17 to reverse the most current increase in the price of petroleum products or face severe repercussions.

TLP leader Saad Hussain Rizvi issued a warning, referencing past street protests that paralyzed the federal capital, saying that if the government did not reverse the price increase, the party would do “what it is known for.”

The TLP gave the federal government a 72-hour “ultimatum” on February 17 to reverse the most current increase in petrol prices.

The retailers claimed that TLP workers forcibly shut down many commercial locations, including Shah Alam, Azam Market, New Alamgir Market, Kashmir Block, and Karachi Block.

The road leading to Niazi Adda and the market near the Shizan Factory area of the provincial capital were forcibly closed by TLP baton-wielding workers, according to Mujahid Maqsood Butt, president of the Lahore Traders Association.

Similar to this, a group of TLP workers blocked off the entrance to the city’s major commercial street, Hall Road, where many store owners had congregated in front of their establishments and sought security from the government.

Despite the police’s presence, a bunch of 20 to 25 TLP motorcycle riders reportedly shut down the shops and Shah Alam market, according to the traders of Urdu Bazaar.

The president of the Lahore Traders Association pleaded with the government for safety, claiming that some individuals are constantly threatening taxpayers while police are merely on the sidelines.
