Terrorism threat increasing with Afghanistan’s deteriorating economic condition

“Now we have a situation in Afghanistan where the Taliban need to be convinced to deal with all of the terrorist movements, not only ISIL-K, which they are fighting but others.”

New York, 17 January 2023 (GNP): The Taliban may start to lose recruits to more violent organizations like ISIS or ISIL if Kabul’s economic condition in Afghanistan doesn’t improve, Pakistan’s Ambassador to UN, Munir Akram, said in response to the rise in terrorism along the Pak-Afghan border.

The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), both of which have targeted Pakistani officials and residents more frequently, as well as the regional ISIS Khorasan branch, also known as ISIS-K or ISIL-K, were specifically mentioned by the Pakistani envoy in an interview with an American magazine, as having occasionally collaborated against Pakistan’s interests.

Ambassador Akram warned about the new challenge while saying that Pakistan has had to deal with Terrorism in the past and (ensured the state’s preparedness by saying) the state is determined to deal with this internally.

He suggested, “Now we have a situation in Afghanistan where the Taliban need to be convinced to deal with all of the terrorist movements, not only ISIL-K, which they are fighting but others.”

While talking about the rising terrorism threat, he further said, “We understand the situation, but we have to find an effective strategy of dealing with it.”

He said that in addition to the TTP and BLA, it was also important to counter other organizations like the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) and the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM).

However, he claimed that the Taliban’s attempts would be tough to succeed in as long as the government continued to face financial difficulties.

“It’s obvious that ISIL-K is becoming stronger, and they’re getting money from outside,” Akram said. “If the Taliban do not have enough money, they may lose some of their factions to ISIL-K, so it’s a very disturbing situation.”
