Taiwan recalled its ambassador from Honduras

Castro's declaration has been warmly received in China, according to a representative for the Chinese Foreign Ministry Wang Wenbin, who remarked that Honduras was making the "correct choice" that was "in keeping with the trend of historical growth and advancement of the times."

Taipei, 23 March 2023 (GNP): Taiwan declared on Thursday that it will withdraw its ambassador from Honduras as the relationship between the two nations deteriorate and Honduras prepares to switch diplomatic recognition to China.

Taiwan and China have been engaged in a conflict for diplomatic recognition since the two countries’ civil war-induced separation in 1949.

The president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, declared last week that her country will act to terminate diplomatic ties with Taiwan and establish diplomatic ties with China.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry issued a statement saying that it had summoned the ambassador to “express our strong dissatisfaction” about Honduras’ decision to send a delegation to Beijing this week, including its foreign minister.

The decision severely disturbs the sentiments of the Taiwan Government and people and overlooks the longstanding relationship between Honduras and Taiwan, which dates back more than 80 years, according to the statement.

“Taiwan had repeatedly reminded the Honduran government of the risk of trusting China’s commitment to establishing diplomatic relations” it added.

In light of Beijing’s massive expenditures to gain support for its “One China” policy, this change would result in only 13 nations recognizing Taiwan.

Among the nations that severed ties with Taiwan in 2018 were El Salvador, Burkina Faso, and the Dominican Republic. Kiribati and the Solomon Islands followed in their footsteps the next year.

During a daily press conference on Thursday, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry Wang Wenbin stated, “We welcome the Honduran government’s positive statement to develop relations with China.

“We are ready to establish and develop bilateral relations on the basis of equality and mutual respect”, he continued.

The Honduran foreign minister expressed confidence last week that diplomatic ties will lead to investment and trade opportunities while highlighting China’s economic might as being “second only to the United States.”

According to Parsifal D’Sola, the founder and head of the ABF China-Latin America Research Center, these economic benefits are especially alluring to emerging Latin American nations and are challenging for Taiwan or its allies to combat.

D’Sola claimed that Taiwan and the US, in general, couldn’t compete with this.

“When you talk about investment in infrastructure, investment in green development, these are the types of foreign direct investments that these countries are looking for in the international arena,” he added.
