Supreme Court declares Imran Khan’s arrest illegal

Supreme Court on Thursday declared Khan's arrest “illegal” and ordered his immediate release.

Islamabad, 11 May 2023 (GNP): In a major relief for former premier Imran Khan Pakistan’s apex court declared his arrest “illegal” on Thursday and ordered his immediate release. The relief came after Khan was produced before a bench on Supreme Court’s orders.

Khan’s plea was heard by three-member bench of apex court comprising of  Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Justice Athar Minallah. The bench heard Khan’s plea against his arrest in the Al-Qadir Trust case, a corruption case involving his charity organization.

The bench in supreme court condemned the manner in which Khan was taken into custody from the premises of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday by paramilitary Rangers, who allegedly misbehaved with him.

“It is good to see you,” Chief Justice Bandial told Khan. “We believe that Imran Khan’s arrest was illegal,” the top judge said. He further said that the IHC should hear the case on Friday. “You will have to accept whatever the high court decides,” the judge added.

Moreover, Bandial said that it was every politician’s responsibility to ensure law and order. He urged Khan to refrain from inciting violence and unrest among his supporters, who have been protesting across the country since his arrest.

Khan’s arrest escalated growing tensions between PTI supporters and the military. At least 10 people have been killed and 2,000 arrested as violent protests have swept the country since he was held.
