Spanish film director Carlos Saura died at 91

Carlos Saura, a well-known Spanish director who passed away on Friday. First gained international attention in the 1960s for his criticisms of Franco's dictatorship before turning his attention to films about music and dance, particularly flamenco.

Madrid, 11 February 2023 (GNP): Carlos Saura, a renowned Spanish film director, passed away at the age of 91 from respiratory failure on February 10th 2023, in Madrid. The 37th Goya Awards would be held the day after he was scheduled to receive the honorary award for lifetime accomplishment.

Over the course of a career spanning five decades, Saura produced roughly 50 films, earning him a reputation as one of the giants of Spanish cinema alongside Luis Bunuel and Pedro Almodovar. He also received numerous honors and awards.

About Carlos Saura: 

Saura was born in Huesca, Aragón, Spain on 4 January 1932. In the years 1957–1958, Saura made Cuenca, his debut movie. His 1962 film Los Golfos, which addressed the topic of juvenile misbehavior in Madrid’s poorest neighborhoods, won praise for its significant social contribution to helping Spanish adolescents.

He further went on to produce famous films such as Flamenco (1955), El Pequeño río Manzanares (1956), La Tarde del domingo (1957), Sinfonía de Aragón (2008), Rosa Rosae (2021). Not to forget, his films received famous award nominations such as BAFTA, Academy Awards and even Golden Globe Awards.

Carlos Saura wed three times. Adela Medrano was his first spouse. Carlos and Antonio were their two kids. He married Mercedes Pérez in 1982, and the two of them had three sons named Manuel, Adrián, and Diego.
