Solar storm heading towards Earth to disrupt Communication Systems

Communication systems may get affected by solar winds travelling at 1.8 million miles per hour due to a massive hole in the Sun that is 20 times the size of the Earth.

Islamabad, 30 March 2023 (GNP): According to scientists, a solar storm headed towards Earth could disrupt communication systems on Friday. They say that solar flares can have an effect on satellites, spacecraft operations, and aviation.

Communication systems may get affected by solar winds travelling at 1.8 million miles per hour due to a massive hole in the Sun that is 20 times the size of the Earth.

The first “coronal hole” was discovered on March 23, and this huge hole is the second to occur in a week. The solar winds that were produced from that hole, which was 30 times the size of Earth, caused stunning auroras to appear as far south as Arizona. The Solar Dynamics Observatory of NASA, which examines the sun, got images of both holes.

A coronal hole is a region on the Sun’s surface where the magnetic field is open, allowing solar wind to escape at higher speeds. When Earth’s magnetic field interacts with the solar wind from a coronal hole, it can cause geomagnetic storms and auroras. These can potentially impact communication and navigation systems, power grids, and satellites. However, the effects are usually mild and mostly limited to higher latitudes.

Solar Storm was discovered by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory and has the potential to propel 1.8 million mph rapid solar winds in our direction.

In reality, the winds have already been observed by the European Space Agency’s Solar Orbiter mission, which is approaching Earth at a speed of about 700 km/s as of Wednesday morning.
