Saudi FM Urges UN Reform

New York, (GNP): Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan has called for significant reforms in United Nations to foster a fairer and more equitable global order.

Speaking at the UN headquarters in New York on Monday, Prince Faisal criticized the current structure of international institutions, stating they are “unfit for purpose”—citing the UN’s failure to hold Israel accountable for its “atrocities.”

His remarks came just a day after the adoption of the “Pact for the Future,” a campaign designed to revive multilateralism and accelerate progress toward achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Saudi Arabia, he said, was actively involved in the negotiations over the pact, reflecting the Kingdom’s commitment to building a “better and greener world.”

Prince Faisal emphasized the need to promote multilateralism as a key tool in addressing the current global challenges, including achieving long-term peace and security for future generations.

He described the pact as a “qualitative step forward” in multilateral cooperation, aligning with the core principles of fairness and equity in the global order, particularly benefiting developing nations.

“The pact calls for closing the digital divide and advancing economic development in developing countries,” Prince Faisal added.

He said that achieving its ambitious goals requires a renewed effort to tackle global challenges and meet the diverse needs of populations worldwide.

Prince Faisal reiterated that Saudi Arabia has been a staunch supporter of multilateral initiatives but stressed that a “brighter future” could only be achieved through comprehensive reforms at the UN.

He argued that the organization needs to be restructured to fulfill its primary role in upholding international peace and security.

Climate Change

On climate change, Prince Faisal said Saudi Arabia is committed to a diversified approach that takes into account the unique capabilities of each country.

He outlined the Kingdom’s focus on energy security, economic development, and addressing climate change as key pillars for global progress.
