Russian hackers targeted US nuclear sites

The attempted cyber attacks were made in last August and September after the Russian President Putin announced the use of nuclear weapons for its territorial security.

Washington, 7 January 2023 (GNP):  A team of Russian hackers known by the name of Cold River tried to hack the data of three US nuclear laboratories this summer, alleged by five cybersecurity experts who were looking into this attempted hacking and data stealing attempts.

The attempts were reported in the months of August and September after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that Moscow would not deter from the of use nuclear weapons for its territorial defense.

The Hackers team Cold River targeted scientists working in the Brookhaven, Argonne, and Lawrence Livermore laboratories through fake emails and login pages to reveal their passwords. None of the laboratory’s spokesperson officially commented on this attempted hacking.

The Russian hacking team Cold River has intensified its hacking attacks on the western allies of Ukraine after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The cyber-attacks on the US nuclear labs and scientists were made at the time when last September a UN special inspection team entered the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to check the safety and security of this plant and others deliberately targeted by Russia.

Earlier, Cold River 2016 tried to breach the cybersecurity of the British foreign office, and it is also blamed for cyber-attacks on other high-profile targets.

The Russian Federal Security Service (FBS) nor the Russian embassy in Washington responded to this.

The US and western officials accuse Moscow of carrying out cyber-attacks and espionage on foreign governments and industries for getting a competitive edge over their competitors. The blame was never accepted by Moscow.

The US National Security Agency (NSA), Britain’s Global Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) nor the foreign office said anything about it.

Last May, as a token, Cold River hackers released the hacked emails of the former head of Military Intelligence Section 6 (MI6) to show its credibility to the world.

The French cyber-security firm SEKOIA. IA reported that at least three NGOs investigating war crimes of Russia in Ukraine were also targeted by this Cold River hacker’s team.
