Russia offers assistance to Syria and Turkey

Following a huge earthquake of magnitude 7.8 that left more than 500 people dead and thousands injured in Syria and Turkey, President Vladimir Putin on Monday offered Russian help to the two nations.

Moscow, 6 February 2023 (GNP): Russia has a sizable military presence in Syria and is a strong ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Putin also enjoys good ties with Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan, a NATO member who has attempted to mediate the crisis between Russia and Ukraine.

In a statement to Erdogan on Monday, Putin said, extended sincere condolences on the numerous human losses and extensive destruction inflicted by a tremendous earthquake in your nation.

Putin separately assured Assad that Russia felt the anguish and pain of those who lost their loved ones and pledged to assist.

Earlier, the Russian ministry of defense claimed that none of their military infrastructure in Syria had been harmed by the earthquake.

President Vladimir Putin also spoke on the phone with Bashar al-Assad of Syria to offer his condolences for the loss of life and destruction caused by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake.

Putin proposed sending Russian search and rescue teams to both Turkey and Syria.

According to a statement from the Kremlin, Bashar al-Assad warmly accepted the offer, and Russian emergency workers will now travel to Syria.

It stated that the Turkish president “gratefully thanked Vladimir Putin for such a rapid and sincere answer and said he was sending instructions to the competent authorities of the nation to accept the help of Russian rescuers.”
