Reko Diq extraction project to start in 2028

Reko Diq is a copper-gold mine. Barrack Gold, a Canadian based company has announced its development and extraction of minerals beginning in 2028.

Chaghai, 17 January 2023 (GNP): The Canadian company Barrack Gold has announced the development of Reko Diq, which will begin in 2028. A ceremony was held at the office of Chief Minister’s secretariat on 15 January 2023, where Barrick Gold Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer, Mark Bristow stated the company stated: “Year 2028 is targeted for first production from the giant copper and gold mine in Balochistan province. This project is a significant new frontier of gold and copper in the world. We have hired the best team of experts while locals are also working on the project.”

He said while addressing a group of journalists that following the completion of legal processes and definitive transaction agreements with Pakistan and Balochistan governments back in December 2022; the company planned to finish the Reko Diq project’s feasibility study update by the end of next year. He further explained that Barrick Gold will complete the project in two phases. In the first phase, it will reset the feasibility study consisting of legal, financial and environmental documents. The company has already completed the feasibility study with previous partners in 2013.

As the CEO of Barracks Gold stated: “We have checked resources of this project, which are reliable, and the key thing to complete is to finalise the geotechnical work around the deposits. We need to continue the investment we have already started. This is one principle.”
