Hanoi, 18 January 2023 (GNP): The Communist Party of Vietnam asked the President of the country Nguyen Xuan Phuc, 68, to resign from office after the initiation of an investigation against him on corruption charges. President Nguyen Xuan Phuc, along with two deputy prime ministers, is accused of corruption charges in the coronavirus pandemic.
President Nguyen Xuan Phuc has conveyed his intentions to the party to resign from the Politburo and Central Parry Committee for the smooth running of this inquiry of alleged corruption against him. His resignation was accepted in an extraordinary committee meeting, and there is quite a possibility that the Parliament would also accept his resignation.

This resignation would further strengthen the party chief, Nguyen Phu Trong’s position in the party.
President Phuc is considered number two in the Vietnamese Communist Party after the party chief Trong.
After serving in different administrative positions, President Phuc became prime minister in 2016, and later on; he was promoted to president of the country in 2021.
The Communist Party of Vietnam did not comment on his resignation from Politburo and Committee, but the state-run media says that President Phuc took the onerous charges on two deputy prime ministers along with other ministers and officials for these indictments.
Further probes are on the way to unearth corruption in the purchase of COVID testing kits and arranging flights for overseas Vietnamese coming to the home.
It is believed that either Communist Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong or the minister for public security To Lam will succeed President Nguyen Xuan Phuc as the new President of Vietnam.
