President Alvi fixed April 30 for Punjab’s Elections

The Largest Provincial Assembly in Pakistan to Hold Fiercely Contested Elections After Supreme Court's Ruling and PTI's Demand for Snap Polls

Islamabad, 03 March 2023 (GNP): President of the Pakistan, Dr. Arif Alvi,  has announced that the general elections of the Punjab Assembly will be held on April 30, Sunday.

The President made this announcement after considering the dates suggested by the Election Commission (ECP). Earlier today election commission wrote a letter to the President suggesting dates for the election.

The announcement of the election date comes amid a tense political climate in the country where Pakistan Tehreek. e. Insaaf (PTI) is demanding for election after they resigned from Assemblies.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court (SC) handed down a 3-2 verdict and ordered the election commission to hold elections within 90 days in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.

Both provinces have been under caretaker governments since their respective provincial assemblies were dissolved on January 14 and January 18 respectively in an attempt to pave the way for the snap polls.

Imran Khan’s PTI had also approached Lahore High Court on January 24, seeking orders for the Punjab Governor to announce the date for elections following which the court ordered ECP to announce the election date immediately.
The announcement has been eagerly awaited by political parties and citizens across the country.

Punjab is the largest and most populous province of the country, and the upcoming elections are expected to be fiercely contested.
