Philippines protests Chinese coast guard’s actions in South China Sea

Manila, 25 March 2024, (GNP): After an incident in the disputed South China Sea, the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines has formally protested against the Chinese Coast Guard.

Three Philippine soldiers allegedly suffered injuries during a water cannon attack close to the Second Thomas Shoal, according to the Philippine government.

The Philippine’s Department of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned what it called the aggressive activities of China’s Coast Guard, in a statement released on Monday.

Manila has directed its embassy in Beijing to lodge a formal grievance against the occurrence.

The conflict took place close to the Second Thomas Shoal, often called Ayungin in the Philippines, a location where Chinese and Filipino tensions have frequently flared up.

The recent incident marks the second time that the vessel Unaizah May 4 has been damaged by a water cannon from the Chinese coastguard in March.
