PEMRA issues warning to ‘Tere Bin’ makers

PEMRA shared a press release on its official Twitter account cautioning the makers of "Tere Bin" against airing "inappropriate" content that violates the organization's rules.

Karachi, 27 May, 2023 (GNP): Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has recently expressed concern over the controversial content depicted in the popular drama series “Tere Bin,” starring Wahaj Ali and Yumna Zaidi.

The series faced widespread criticism on social media after a provocative promo suggesting the marital rape between the characters Murtasim (played by Wahaj Ali) and Meerab (played by Yumna Zaidi).

The alleged heavy backlash resulted in the episode being edited with voiceovers of “WhatsApp Quality”. However, the controversial visuals remained intact.

PEMRA has taken notice of the controversial content and served official warning to the creators of drama serial.

On Friday,  two days after the alleged episode’s broadcast, PEMRA shared a press release on its official Twitter account cautioning the makers of “Tere Bin” against airing “inappropriate” content that violates the organization’s rules.

The press release stated that episode 47 of Geo Entertainment channel’s TV serial “Tere Bin” showcased objectionable content, which clearly contradicts both PEMRA’s regulations and the 2015 electronic media regulations.

PEMRA’s press release urged the production team to immediately remove or conceal the controversial content and ensure that no similar material is aired in future episodes. It emphasized that strict action would be taken if any further regulations are violated.

In response to PEMRA’s statement, social media users criticized the timing of the regulatory authority’s intervention, deeming it “a little too late.”

Some users highlighted that the episode had already been modified, rendering it non-controversial. They also urged PEMRA to watch the episode before making judgments.

Meanwhile, many applauded the power of social media activism, acknowledging the efforts of those who raised their voices against the negative portrayal of marital rape and succeeded in influencing the narrative.
