Operation Azm-e-Istehkam: Pakistan envoy to US highlights need for advanced small arms

Islamabad, 28 June 2024, (GNP): Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States(US) , Masood Khan, stated that Pakistan requires small arms and other modern equipment to ensure the success of Operation Azm-e-Istehkam.

This week, the federal government approved a new operation, a revitalized national counter-terrorism campaign, aimed at eradicating terrorism in the country.

Despite concerns about potential impacts on local populations in targeted areas, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif clarified that it is not a large-scale military operation and will not cause population displacement.

“Pakistan has launched Azm-e-Istehkam […] to counter and dismantle terrorist networks. For this, we require advanced small arms and communication equipment,” Masood Khan stated at an event organized by the Wilson Center’s South Asia Institute in collaboration with the International Academy of Letters USA in Washington, DC.

Speaking at the conference titled ‘Looking Back, Looking Forward: Assessing the US-Pakistan Relationship’, the ambassador emphasized the need for Pakistan and the United States to continue investing in the “reset” of their relationship.

He highlighted the importance of maintaining strong security ties, enhancing intelligence cooperation, resuming sales of advanced military platforms, and sustaining Pakistan’s US-origin defense equipment.

“This is crucial for regional security and opposing the rising tide of terrorism that also threatens the interests of the US and its allies,” he said.

Khan emphasized that bilateral relations should be based on real-world conditions while aiming for stronger security and economic partnerships. “Secondly, one or two issues should not hold the entire relationship hostage,” he added.

Pointing out Pakistan’s demographic advantage, technological advancements, and vast market potential, he invited US investors and businesses to explore opportunities in the country.

He outlined security, economic, and strategic cooperation as key areas for future collaboration between the two nations, noting that security cooperation is crucial for building trust. He mentioned high-level defense talks, regular meetings, and joint military exercises like Inspired Union-2024, Falcon Talon, and Red Flag as examples of ongoing defense collaboration.

Additionally, Khan proposed that the US should consider Pakistan a partner in its diplomatic efforts in Kabul, if such plans are underway, and work with Pakistan on counterterrorism and promoting the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan in an inclusive manner.
