Nine PTI leaders are detained for 30 days, LHC was told

Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Asad Umar, Azam Swati, and others have been detained in various Punjab jails.

Islamabad, 28 February 2023 (GNP): The Lahore High Court (LHC) was told on Monday that nine Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders were detained for 30 days in separate Punjab jails.

It was mentioned in a report presented to Judge Shehram Sarwar Chaudhry, who was hearing petitions for the release of the PTI leaders who had been detained by a district law officer on account of the provincial home department and the jail authorities. According to the report, Shah Mehmood Qureshi was detained along with Asad Umar, Omar Sarfraz Cheema, Waleed Iqbal, Azam Swati, Murad Raas, Muhammad Khan Madni, and Azam Khan Niazi in Attock Jail, Rajanpur Jail, Bhakkar Jail, Layyah Jail, and Azam Khan Niazi and Ahsan Dogar in Layyah jail.

According to the report, Deputy Commissioner Rafia Haider of Lahore had issued the detention orders, and with the agreement of the relevant authorities, 77 people had been moved to various jails in the province of Punjab.

 

Nine leaders including Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Asad Umar, and Azam Swati have been detained for 30 days.

 

According to reports, the PTI leaders violated law and order by blocking The Mall road and barring public assemblies there. Besides endangering the peace, these leaders interfered with the Pakistan Super League’s security preparations and foreign players as well. The court then postponed further hearing until March 3 and directed the provincial sitting judge to file the investigation and send a copy to the petitioner’s attorney. The report was submitted by the Punjab Home Department in response to the court orders issued at the previous hearing.

The PTI leaders who had voluntarily handed themselves over to police in Lahore as part of the court arrest movements had petitions filed for their recovery by Senator Ejaz Ahmad Chaudhry and others.

The court also asked the Punjab government to provide a report by March 3 regarding a petition PTI leader, Fawad Chaudhry, had filed opposing the filing of criminal proceedings and the relocation of PTI leaders to multiple districts.
