Meeting between Vice-President of the EU and US Secretary of State

Washington, 15 October 2021 (GNP/TDI): On Thursday, Josep Borrell, the High Representative/Vice-President of the EU, met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington.

The High Representative praised the US Government’s recent intensive involvement and emphasized the need of deepening the EU-US strategic relationship in order to jointly handle foreign policy, security, and global issues.

He praised the formation of the Trade and Technology Council in Pittsburgh as a shining example of the shared resolve to work together to address some of today’s most urgent issues.

VP Borrell and Secretary Blinken emphasized their desire to begin a security and defense conversation before the end of the year. The establishment of this dedicated channel to address shared security and defense issues, which builds on the agenda agreed by EU and US leaders at the EU-US Summit in June.

VP Borell commended the United States’ support for a more effective European defense. Emphasizing that greater EU capabilities benefit transatlantic and global security, as well as NATO.

They also agreed to hold Indo-Pacific talks between the EU and the US, with the goal of enhancing transatlantic cooperation and cooperative involvement in the area. This year, they decided to convene their first high-level meeting.
