Journalism in Pakistan at risk says International Federation of Journalists

Islamabad, 3 May 2024, (GNP): The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) stated that the state of journalism in Pakistan is “in danger” as the world marks Press Freedom Day.

May 3, celebrated globally as World Press Freedom Day, serves as a crucial opportunity to highlight the significance of journalism and the freedom of expression.

The theme for this year, “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of the environmental crisis,” underscores the vital role of journalism and freedom of expression amid the ongoing global environmental challenges.

During the event, the IFJ unveiled its 22nd annual South Asia Press Freedom Report, revealing that journalists have become “targets” in the power struggle between former prime minister Imran Khan and the establishment.

According to the report, 60 journalists received legal notices, and numerous others were arrested and are currently detained.

The report also highlighted that approximately eight journalists faced charges of sedition, terrorism, and incitement to violence, with many of these cases involving journalists who supported Imran Khan and his party.

It also outlined that the access to information and freedom of expression were constrained, and the government neglected to establish a safety commission to safeguard journalists.

The economic situation of the media in Pakistan was also bad. People were fired from the media and their wages were cut,” added the IFJ report.

AEMEND vows to fight adverse situation

AEMEND has affirmed its commitment to persist in the constitutional and legal battle for freedom of expression and to combat the challenging circumstances. In a statement, AEMEND expressed concern over the challenging situation faced by journalists and media institutions in Pakistan.

“There have been numerous restrictions and channels, including the suspension of television programs by state and non-state actors, undue pressure and illegal demands for the dismissal of journalists, which has been increasing day by day,” it added.

AEMEND said that Pakistan is included in the list of “most dangerous” countries for journalists “where many journalists have been martyred and disabled for life while performing their duties”.

The President is advocating for the safety and security of journalists.

President Asif Ali Zardari underscored the importance of implementing measures to ensure the safety and security of journalists, enabling them to report freely on crucial matters without fear.

“The Constitution of Pakistan guarantees the freedom of the press, however, it is also the responsibility of the media to abide by journalistic ethics and report responsibly and accurately, keeping in view the national interest,” the president said.

President Zardari emphasized the necessity of establishing an environment devoid of intimidation or harassment for journalists, allowing them to express their opinions freely.

He noted that this year’s theme highlights the vital role of a free press in raising awareness and educating the public about climate change and its consequences.
