Joint Trilateral Statement by Saudi Arabia, Iran, and China

The three nations affirmed their desire to make every effort to improve regional and global peace and security.

Riyadh/ Beijing, 10 March 2023 (GNP): In support of the admirable initiative taken by President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China to foster friendly ties between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Based on the agreement that President Xi Jinping reached with the Saudi and Iranian leaders, China agreed to host and sponsor negotiations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia;

Starting from their shared desire to use dialogue and diplomacy to resolve their differences as well as their brotherly ties and observing the tenets and goals of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and United Nations (UN) charters as well as international norms and conventions.

The two delegations, one from the Saudi Arabia led by Dr. Musaad bin Mohammed Al-Aiban, Minister of State, Member of the Council of Ministers, and National Security Advisor, and the other from the Iran led by Admiral Ali Shamkhani, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, held negotiations in Beijing from March 6 to 10, 2023.

The Republic of Iraq and the Sultanate of Oman received praise and thanks from the Saudi and Iranian parties for hosting rounds of talks between their respective sides in 2021 and 2022. The leadership and government of China received praise from both parties for hosting and financing the talks as well as for the efforts made to ensure their success.

The three nations declare that Iran and  Saudi Arabia have achieved an agreement, which calls for the resumption of diplomatic ties as well as the reopening of their embassies and posts within a two-month window.

Under the pact, they reaffirm their commitment to preserving state sovereignty and refraining from meddling in other nations’ domestic affairs. They also agreed that the foreign ministers of both nations should get together to put this into action, arrange for the return of their ambassadors, and talk about ways to improve bilateral ties.

The Security Cooperation Agreement between them, signed on April 17, 2001, and the General Agreement for Cooperation in the Areas of Commerce, Trade, Investment, Technology, Science, Culture, Sports, and Youth, inked on May 27, 1998, were also agreed to be put into effect.
