Japan Prop-up African Union Entry in G20

Japan promised to offer ¥ 10 billion nearly equal to a $73.5 million low-interest rate to the education sector of Senegal.

Tokyo, 20 December 2022 (GNP): The Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kashida, reaffirmed the support of his country to the African Union’s entry into G20, a forum of major world economies owing to the increasing importance of the African Union in the world economy in a meeting with the President of Senegal Macky Sall in Tokyo.

This bid came at a time when President Joe Biden vowed to strengthen the bilateral relations of the United States with African countries to mitigate the increasing influence of Beijing on the continent.

The President of Senegal is the head of the African Union right now.

Japanese and Senegalese leadership agreed on enhancing cooperation in oil and gas exploration and development in Senegal. This will open new avenues to Japanese companies and investors in this West African country.

Japan promised to offer ¥ 10 billion, nearly equal to a $73.5 million low-interest rate, to the education sector of Senegal.

Another ¥15.42 billion would be provided by Tokyo for the development and raising export of Senegalese fishery products.

Japan, a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the coming two years, wants to deepen its ties with the 55 nations of Africa, bolstering both its economic and diplomatic weight in international politics.

Tokyo regularly hosts International Conference on African Development (TICAD) every three years since its inception in 1993.

The eight conferences of TICAD were held last August in which Japan avowed to strongly support the African countries in attaining sustainable, resilient economic growth akin to their African ideals.
